Pseudotropheus brevis has subdued brownish colours and two longitudinal rows of dark flank spots. It inhabits southern Lake Malawi around Boadzulu Island, Monkey Bay and Nkhudzi among other sites.

It takes surface insects and has been observed partly leaping for insects just above water. This differs from many mbuna chiefly feeding on rock growth.
