Female Pseudanthias cheirospilos have orange bodies and golden under-eye stripes with lavender margins. Males differ in colour and fin proportions. The species regained separate status after combination with P. squamipinnis.

It inhabits eastern Indian and western Pacific reefs and lagoons, gathering above reefs for zooplankton. Older squamipinnis observations may include both species.
