The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Senegal bichir has an elongated, greyish-olive body with a paler underside. A row of separate small fins runs along its back. Its pectoral fins have fleshy bases projecting clearly from the sides of the body.
It inhabits African rivers, lagoons and wet margins of freshwater habitats. It often stays near muddy bottoms or under plant cover. It hunts small aquatic animals, moving with snake-like body movements.
Besides breathing in water, it can take oxygen from atmospheric air. Swimming to the surface lets it use an additional oxygen source in an environment where oxygen levels in the water may vary.
Długość standardowa (SL): od końca pyska do nasady płetwy ogonowej, bez płetwy ogonowej. Przykład, nie średnia populacji. Widok przedni ma przybliżone proporcje.
