The southern platyfish, or platy, has a short, deep body and rounded tail. Females are usually larger than males. Red, yellow and patterned ornamental lines were produced through breeding; some traded fish also have mixed ancestry.

Xiphophorus maculatus naturally inhabits quiet inland waters from Mexico to northern Belize. It eats insects and other small foods.

The male has a gonopodium used in internal fertilisation. The female bears live, free-swimming young. Its short, stocky outline differs from the more slender swordtail of the same genus.
