The African butterflyfish is a freshwater fish with broad pectoral fins resembling outstretched wings. It has a flattened head and a large, upward-facing mouth. An irregular brown pattern helps it blend with its surroundings.
It inhabits calm waters of West and Central Africa. It stays just below the surface, watching for insects and other small animals among vegetation. Its mouth position allows it to seize prey from the surface.
It makes sudden leaps above the water. The broad pectoral fins and elongated pelvic-fin rays are particularly visible during movement. When resting, their spread gives the fish a characteristic broad outline from above.
