The panda cory is a small bottom-dwelling fish of the upper Amazon. Its pale body contrasts with a dark eye mask, black dorsal fin and a patch at the tail base. Bony plates protect its body.

Barbels around its mouth explore the substrate during feeding. Besides breathing through gills, it can swim to the surface and take in air. This additional means of obtaining oxygen occurs in cory catfish despite their chiefly bottom-dwelling activity.
