The oscar is a large fish of the western Amazon and Orinoco basins. It has a powerful head and broad mouth; a dark body may carry orange markings and an eyespot near the tail base.
It selects quiet, shallow waters with muddy or sandy bottoms. It eats fish, crustaceans, worms and insect larvae, capturing prey with a broad mouth.
Both parents clean a selected spawning site. They defend eggs and may move hatchlings into bottom depressions. Care continues with protection of the young.
