Peacock mantis shrimp — size comparison — facts and sources

The peacock mantis shrimp is a colourful Indo-Pacific crustacean. Its olive-green body contrasts with red legs and dark spots on the carapace sides. Its eyes sit on mobile stalks. It lives near reefs, often in burrows with two exits dug into sand or gravel.

It hunts crustaceans, molluscs and other small animals. Its front raptorial appendages act like rapidly extending hammers, breaking hard prey coverings with powerful blows. Other appendages help hold and process food.

The female cares for her laid eggs inside the burrow. She holds the compact egg mass with the front of her body, cleans it and maintains water flow. During this time she rarely leaves the shelter.
