The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The ocellaris clownfish lives on shallow reefs and in lagoons of the eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific. Three white bands with narrow dark edges cross its orange body; darker natural forms also occur. Fin details distinguish it from the similar percula clownfish, so colour alone can be misleading.
It spends most of its life near an anemone. Stinging tentacles protect it from predators, while a mucus layer permits safe contact with the host. It ventures out for small crustaceans and other zooplankton, supplementing its diet with algae, and quickly retreats among the tentacles when alarmed.
Groups have a clear hierarchy: the largest fish is female, followed by a breeding male and smaller individuals. If the female dies, the male can change sex and another fish take his place. Eggs attach to a surface near the anemone. The male cleans and fans them; newly hatched larvae begin life in the plankton.
