Neon tetra — size comparison — facts and sources

The neon tetra is a small Amazon Basin fish found in tributaries of the Solimões, among other waters. An iridescent blue stripe runs along its side, while a red band occupies the rear of the lower body. In the similar cardinal tetra, red extends much closer to the head. Transparent fins are inconspicuous, making a moving fish resemble two flashes of colour.

It inhabits small waterways and feeds on insect larvae, small crustaceans and other tiny invertebrates, also taking plant food. Small particles are caught while swimming or picked from vegetation. The fish move in groups, often changing direction together.
