The pond loach is an elongated bottom-dwelling fish originating in East Asia. Irregular spots cover its brown body, its fins are small, and five pairs of short barbels surround the mouth.
It lives in calm waters with soft bottoms, including ditches and rice fields. It searches the substrate for small invertebrates and organic material. It can burrow into mud or sand, leaving the front of its body exposed.
It tolerates low oxygen and uses air taken at the surface. It has been introduced to many places outside its native range. Breeding has also produced golden varieties much paler than typical wild fish.
Długość całkowita (TL): od końca pyska do końca płetwy ogonowej, bez wąsików. Długość zwykle spotykana według źródła, nie średnia populacji. Widok przedni ma przybliżone proporcje.
