Maylandia aurora varies between populations. Familiar males have blue upper heads and bodies contrasting with yellow chests and bellies and subtle bars; others have browner upperparts.

It chiefly inhabits Lake Malawi rock-sand junctions. Males defend rock sites or basal depressions. Native populations occur near Likoma and Mozambique; fish were also translocated elsewhere in the lake.
