The mandarinfish has a greenish body covered in irregular blue and orange bands. Large pelvic fins provide support while moving near the bottom. The male’s first dorsal-fin ray is distinctly elongated.
It searches sheltered reef areas and rubble for small crustaceans and other invertebrates. Feeding involves frequently picking tiny prey from successive crevices with its small mouth.
At dusk, a pair may rise together above the bottom and release eggs and sperm into the water. Eggs develop without parental care, while adults return to life near the bottom among reef shelters.
