The long-snouted seahorse swims upright. It has a long tubular snout, a body protected by bony rings and a grasping tail. Brownish colours and skin appendages help it blend into vegetation.

It occupies seagrass meadows, algae beds and other sheltered places. The tail grips plants while small crustaceans are sucked into the mouth, allowing feeding without prolonged swimming in open water.

During reproduction a female transfers eggs into the male’s brood pouch. Embryos develop there until he releases independent young.
