Loggerhead musk turtle — size comparison — facts and sources

Sternotherus minor is a small freshwater turtle with a domed brown shell and a large, spotted head. The shell's raised keels become less prominent with age. Its toes are webbed and end in claws.

It inhabits rivers and streams in the southeastern United States. It searches for food near the bottom. Young turtles eat many aquatic insects, while molluscs become increasingly important in older animals, which crush their shells with powerful jaws. Females lay their eggs on land; hatchlings live independently from the outset.
