The Sargassum shrimp lives in the Atlantic, including among floating masses of the brown alga Sargassum. Its golden-brown, marbled pattern resembles the colour of the algae. Its body is flattened from side to side, and the rostrum, the forward extension of the carapace, forms a long, flat blade.

The algae provide a three-dimensional shelter floating on the water. The species also occurs in seagrass meadows in the tropical western Atlantic. In both habitats this small shrimp lives among densely arranged parts of its plant surroundings.
