Hongi is a formally undescribed cichlid labelled Labidochromis sp. Hongi, named after a rocky island off Tanzania’s Lake Malawi shore. Populations differ in colour; males are usually brighter.

It inhabits relatively shallow rocks. Dominant males defend territories; females and subordinate males may group. Females mouthbrood eggs and pairs do not remain permanently bonded.
