The kuhli loach has a highly elongated body with dark crossbands on a yellowish or orange background. Small fins and a small head allow movement through tight spaces on the bottom. Despite resembling an eel, it belongs to the loach family.

It lives near the bottom of forest streams and other lowland waters, seeking small organisms among bottom cover. It reproduces by laying eggs. Other banded Pangio species are also sold as kuhli loaches, making pattern and head details important for identification.
