The Asian stinging catfish is a bottom-dwelling South Asian fish. It inhabits ponds, ditches, wetlands and muddy rivers and is also farmed in rice fields. Its elongated body lacks scales, and four pairs of barbels surround the flattened head.
It can obtain atmospheric oxygen through additional respiratory organs. This helps it live in oxygen-poor water. It is omnivorous, eating small invertebrates, plant material and detritus. It stays mainly near the bottom and also tolerates slightly brackish water.
Breeding occurs during monsoon rains. Eggs are laid in a shallow depression in mud, and parents may guard the offspring. Pectoral-fin spines are associated with a venom apparatus and serve a defensive role.
