Guppy — size comparison — facts and sources

The guppy comes from northern South America and parts of the Caribbean. Wild males are small, slender and marked with colourful spots; larger females have fuller, usually more subdued bodies. Broad fan-shaped tails and elaborate patterns in many aquarium guppies result from selective breeding.

Guppies inhabit streams and other shallow inland waters. They eat small invertebrates, zooplankton and organic matter. Introductions have spread them far beyond their native region.

Males have a gonopodium, a modified anal fin used for internal fertilisation. Females give birth to developed, freely swimming young that must immediately find food and shelter. Colour and courtship behaviour are diverse. Mature males display the side of the body to females, showing the pattern and fins.
