Green swordtail — size comparison — facts and sources

The green swordtail takes its name from the male’s elongated lower tail-fin rays. The wild form is greenish-silver with a lengthwise line and dark sword edge. Red, orange and multicoloured aquarium fish result from breeding.

Its natural range covers inland waters from Mexico to north-western Honduras. It eats plant material and small animals. Populations outside this area may be introduced.

Fertilisation is internal; the male uses a gonopodium formed from the anal fin. The female gives birth to free-swimming young. She usually has a larger body and lacks the typical sword, so adult appearance differs clearly by sex.
