Goldfish — size comparison — facts and sources

The goldfish is a domesticated form of the Asian species Carassius auratus. Centuries of selection produced varied tails, body shapes and colours, from slender orange fish to stocky forms with double fins. Naturally coloured fish may be olive or brown. All these forms belong to the same species.

It mainly feeds near the bottom and among vegetation, taking small invertebrates, algae, plant fragments and detritus, or decomposing organic matter. It sucks in and sifts bottom material while searching. In open waters, it inhabits ponds, lakes and quieter river sections.

Fish released by people have established populations outside the native range. Their feeding can disturb sediment, increase turbidity and alter conditions for plants and other animals.
