The cichlid also called Chewere has an elongated dark body with pale blue bars and yellowish tail. It belongs to Maylandia melissa, described by Jay Stauffer and Ad Konings in 2023.

It inhabits Lake Malawi’s rock-sand zone around 5–40 metres deep. It takes plankton and food from surface growth. Males hold spawning sites beneath rocks; females mouthbrood eggs.
