Domestic discus — size comparison — facts and sources

Domestic discus are selectively bred lines of discus fish in the genus Symphysodon, whose wild ancestors come from Amazonia. They have deep, strongly flattened bodies, small mouths and well-developed dorsal and anal fins.

Blue Diamond, Pigeon Blood, Red Turquoise and Snow White are names of captive-bred varieties. Selection has established different colours and patterns, and individual lines may have mixed ancestry. Determining their ancestors requires breeding records.

Discus care for their eggs and young. Early in development the fry feed on secretions from their parents' skin.
