The convict tang has a pale body crossed by dark vertical bands. It occurs across much of the Indo-Pacific and tropical eastern Pacific.

Adults eat filamentous algae from hard reef substrate, including near river mouths. They may gather to spawn together, releasing eggs and sperm into water. Young can be numerous in shallow rock pools left at low tide.
