The clown loach occurs naturally on Sumatra and Borneo. Three broad dark bands cross its orange body, and barbels surround its downward-facing mouth.

Adults feed near the bottom of larger rivers. They search among wood, rocks and hollows for worms, crustaceans and plant material. Bottom cover also provides hiding places.

Breeding is associated with the start of the rainy season. Young use flooded areas, while adults more often occupy main channels. Changing water levels therefore connect the feeding and development sites used by different generations.
