Red Cherry is a red variety of Neocaridina davidi. Intense colouring resulted from selection; natural animals are often translucent or brown-green. Females may be larger and more strongly coloured than males. Blue, yellow and other domestic lines may also belong to this species.
It travels over plants, stones and the bottom, continually picking small food particles. It eats biofilm, algae, detritus and tiny organisms. Biofilm is a thin layer of microorganisms and organic matter growing on submerged surfaces.
A female carries eggs beneath the abdomen and moves them to provide water flow. Young hatch resembling miniature adults. Development can occur entirely in fresh water without a marine larval phase. This clearly distinguishes Neocaridina from Amano shrimp, whose larvae develop in salt water.
