The cardinal tetra has a shimmering blue stripe along its side and intensely red underparts. Red extends from near the head to the tail; in the similar neon tetra it mainly covers the rear half. Fins are delicate and almost transparent.

It inhabits waters of the upper Orinoco and Negro basins. It eats small crustaceans, insect larvae and other tiny animals fitting its small mouth. Fish travel in groups, often changing direction together.
