Boeseman's rainbowfish comes from the Ajamaru and Aitinjo lake region of West Papua. Mature males have deep bodies with blue forequarters and orange-yellow rear halves. Young and females are less contrasting.

Widely bred in captivity, it nevertheless has a small natural range associated with particular lakes. Fish form pairs during reproduction, with adult males displaying the most intense colours.
