The Amano shrimp has a translucent body with rows of dark dots or dashes along the sides. Long antennae continually investigate nearby surroundings. Older literature uses Caridina japonica; taxonomic revision established Caridina multidentata.
Adults live in rivers, often over stony bottoms. They move across submerged surfaces collecting algae and other small foods. Small claws pick particles from uneven stones and plants.
Females carry eggs beneath the abdomen, but larvae require salt water. Naturally, offspring drift downstream towards the sea. After metamorphosis young return inland for the rest of their lives. This journey connects rivers and coasts even though adults are chiefly associated with fresh water.
