Coral snapping shrimp — size comparison — facts and sources

The coral snapping shrimp is associated with branching corals of the genus Pocillopora. It lives between their branches, using shelter within the living colony. Usually one pair occupies its own host and defends access against other adult shrimps of the same genus.

Its presence may benefit the coral. Research on shrimps assigned to the Alpheus lottini complex found that they help remove sediment accumulating on the colony's surface. Alongside the crabs living there, they also help defend corals against coral-eating starfish.
