The American Pit Bull Terrier is a strong, agile dog with a short coat and clearly visible muscles. It has a broad head, powerful neck and proportionate body. Its build should allow free, springy movement without excessive heaviness. Its smooth coat occurs in many colours, so the breed's distinctive appearance comes chiefly from proportions and athletic ability.
It descends from American breeding of dogs originating in British bulldog and terrier crosses. This population's history also includes use in dog fighting. The United Kennel Club registered its first representative in 1898. Sporting uses and companionship were later developed as well, retaining strength, endurance and readiness for intense activity.
The APBT is usually energetic, quick to learn and deeply engaged in human contact. It readily joins shared play and quickly expresses enthusiasm. Friendliness towards people does not, however, determine relationships with unfamiliar dogs, which may be more difficult. It can pursue a chosen goal for a long time, and its determination and agility appear in both sport and ordinary play.
