The American Leopard Hound is a strong, agile hound with short, dense hair and drop ears. Merle colouring is common, although other colours are permitted. Its body is slightly elongated, legs fairly long and head broad. Its build allows efficient travel through scrub and uneven terrain.
It belongs to the American tradition of dogs tracking game and then announcing its tree refuge by voice. It was formerly called the Leopard Cur. The United Kennel Club recognised the population in 1998 and adopted American Leopard Hound in 2008. Various traditions describe earlier ancestry, but the exact ancestral contributions are uncertain.
It is enduring, inquisitive and strongly task-focused. It can follow an interesting scent for a long time while remaining attentive to its handler's voice. It readily cooperates with people and engages in shared activity. Hunting arousal can be much greater than in a quiet home, where it may show a gentler disposition.
