The American Hairless Terrier is a small, muscular dog with a light build and mobile, usually upright ears. Hairless individuals have bare skin that may carry differently coloured patches; coated dogs also occur. Its distinctly terrier build is agile, alert and sturdy without excessive delicacy.
The breed began with Josephine, a female born in a Rat Terrier litter in 1972. Her spontaneously occurring hairlessness was subsequently established through planned breeding. The breed therefore developed from American farm terriers rather than ancient hairless dogs from other continents. Coated members of the same population were retained alongside hairless dogs.
Curious, lively and usually interested in people, it quickly investigates new objects, sounds and nearby movement. It can become deeply engaged in play and readily respond to human encouragement. Attachment to its household accompanies alertness.
