The American Foxhound is a tall, slender scent hound with long legs and a short coat. It is usually more lightly built than its English relative, with which it shares ancestry. It has long drooping ears, a gentle expression and a strong back. Its movement reveals endurance: it can maintain a free stride over long distances, efficiently covering extensive terrain.
The breed's history is closely linked to Virginia and the development of American hunting packs. George Washington bred his own dogs, combining local animals with hounds imported from Europe. Breeders sought a faster, enduring dog suited to American hunting conditions. Later breeders developed these lines, and the American Foxhound also became an ancestor of subsequent native hound breeds.
In familiar surroundings it is often gentle and friendly. It is usually comfortable with other dogs but shows considerable independence while searching. An interesting scent can capture its entire attention and prompt prolonged travel in one direction. Its voice is loud and melodious, and its energy is clearest outdoors when it can investigate successive trails.
