American Eskimo Dog — size comparison — facts and sources

The American Eskimo Dog is a white spitz with a dense, stand-off coat, erect ears and a bushy tail carried over its back. Dark eyes and nose contrast clearly with the pale coat. Fuller neck hair forms a ruff. The breed occurs in different sizes, retaining a similar appearance and distinctive lively movement.

It developed in the United States from European spitz dogs brought by immigrants. Despite its name it does not descend from traditional Inuit dogs and was not created as a sled breed. Its history includes guarding homes and farms as well as circus performances. Its striking white coat, agility and ease of learning tasks before an audience were valued in displays.

It is intelligent, sociable and very attentive. It quickly notices changes in its surroundings, often announcing them by barking. Among its people it enjoys play and learning, while it may initially keep its distance from strangers. Interest in people combines with typical spitz alertness. Its expressiveness appears not only in its voice but also in rapid responses to movement and new situations.
