The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The American Akita is a large, strongly built spitz with a broad head and small forward-tilting ears. It has a thick neck, deep body and fluffy tail curled over the back. The dense double coat occurs in many colours, including dark masks and large white patches. Its outline is substantial and movement purposeful and steady.
American and Japanese Akitas share roots in northern Japanese dogs. After the Second World War, some animals, particularly from the Dewa line, reached the United States with returning soldiers. Breeding there followed a different direction from Japan, retaining a heavier type and wider colour range. Separation and differing breeding aims eventually led to recognition as two distinct breeds.
Akitas usually form strong attachments while remaining independent. They do not welcome every stranger readily and may watch quietly from a distance. They can act firmly and remember earlier experiences for a long time. Responses to other dogs, especially of the same sex, may be assertive. At home, affection often appears as discreet companionship, with more exuberance emerging during play.
