The Alaskan Malamute is a powerful northern dog with a broad head, small upright ears and a very dense coat. Strong legs, a deep chest and a fluffy tail carried over the back shape its outline. A pale face mask and white underside contrast with darker hair along the back. Its build chiefly serves endurance and pulling strength.
The breed descends from Alaskan sled dogs associated with the lives of North American Arctic peoples. They carried and hauled loads where transport was essential to daily life. Sustained work under load mattered more than running speed alone. This tradition distinguishes the Malamute from lighter dogs developed mainly for faster teams.
Malamutes are generally welcoming towards people and enjoy group life. A love of play may persist for a long time, although adults can become more settled. They do not always wait for instructions: curiosity and independence encourage exploration on their own terms. They may be assertive with other dogs, while small animals can trigger a strong desire to chase.
