The Standard Alaskan Klee Kai resembles a small sled dog, with upright ears, a dense double coat and a characteristic facial mask. A fluffy tail curls over the back, and a light build permits quick, springy movement. Standard is the largest of three sizes, alongside Miniature and Toy, all within one breed.
Linda Spurlin and her family began the Alaskan programme in the 1970s, seeking Alaskan Husky appearance in a smaller companion. Selection continued for build and size, and breeding opened more widely in 1988. A separate breed with its own standard emerged.
It is usually lively, curious and closely attached to familiar people. It enjoys play but may remain distant from strangers for a long time. It watches events closely and clearly communicates arousal. Individuals differ in physical closeness: some constantly seek it, others prefer activity and return on their own terms.
