The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Airedale Terrier is the largest terrier, with a strong, almost square body and a long head. A wiry coat, beard and small folded ears distinguish it. The head, legs and underparts are tan, while a darker saddle covers the back. Muscular yet agile, it moves briskly with its head high and a keen interest in its surroundings.
It comes from Yorkshire in England, particularly the Aire, Wharfe and Calder valleys. Local terriers also worked around water, and versatility and scenting ability were valued in the Airedale’s development. It later served beyond hunting, including in police, military and rescue work. Its size allowed tasks beyond the reach of smaller terriers while retaining their courage and persistence.
Airedales are generally confident, inventive and ready for activity. They enjoy family contact but may decide for themselves what to do. They learn rules quickly, while monotonous repetition can prompt them to find their own amusement. They watch unfamiliar people and situations closely. Interest in small animals and determined play remain features of the temperament.
