The Aïdi, or Atlas Mountain Dog, has a strong, compact outline and dense coat protecting it in changeable mountain conditions. Hair is more abundant around the neck and on the tail. A broad head and attentive expression give it a resolute appearance. The breed occurs in various colours while retaining the build of a capable dog working over extensive terrain.
It is associated with semi-nomadic communities in North Africa's mountains and plateaux. It protected camps, possessions and livestock against predators and intruders. Its role was guarding rather than precisely herding a flock. This way of life favoured resilient, alert dogs capable of decisions without constant human direction.
With its own family the Aïdi can be affectionate and deeply devoted. At the same time it watches strangers closely, assessing their behaviour and distance from familiar territory. It can react decisively when it finds a situation concerning. Its independence accompanies sensitivity to events around those close to it. Instead of constantly seeking play with everyone it meets, it often remains a focused observer.
