The Affenpinscher is a small, stocky dog with a rough coat and an exceptionally distinctive face. Bushy eyebrows, projecting cheek hair, a moustache and beard give it a monkey-like appearance, reflected in the breed's German name. A short back, dark eyes and lively facial expressions make it easy to recognise even among other small rough-coated dogs.
It descends from German farm dogs that controlled rodents around homes and outbuildings. Gradually, smaller individuals also moved indoors, and breeding began to focus on companionship. Small size and characteristic head hair became established. Its former work nevertheless left a legacy of quick responses and an inclination to investigate small moving objects.
The Affenpinscher can be very affectionate with those close to it while remaining determined and stubborn. It quickly becomes animated, enjoys watching its surroundings and sometimes shows sudden interest in a new situation. Small obstacles need not discourage it from a chosen activity. Its expressive face clearly reveals changing moods, from concentrated observation to a sudden burst of joy.
